In Phoenix, Arizona, where Flower Street Urban Gardens is based, there are two optimal growing seasons every year: one in the spring, the other in the fall.
Tradition says that come October, the temperatures are cool enough for people to start planting seeds for the fall/winter flowers and vegetables. But like other things this year, that is not the case for 2020.
There have been 140 days this year of 100 degrees or higher. Already in October, Phoenix recorded five straight days of 105 degrees or higher so far. That’s already a new record for the month! Depending on the next few weeks, 2020 may become the new record for 100-degree-plus temperatures.
So now is the time to get your soil amended with compost, fertilizer to get you ready to start GROWING!

Most of your gardening retailers should be showing seeds for these popular winter flowers. Look now to get ready to plant in the next few weeks.
Some of the more popular offerings to plant in your home’s wallflower gardens include:
- Hot Pink Geraniums
- Yellow and Orange Marigolds
- White Snapdragons
- Sweet Alyssum
- Yellow or Blue Pansies
Most of these do not need an overabundance of hydration and can get by on the fewer hours of sunlight in the winter. The blooms on these flowers will certainly last through the late Spring, and possibly into June.
